Tranmere Rovers, the English League Two club, is mourning the loss of Peter Johnson, its former chairman, who passed away at the age of 84. Johnson, a Liverpool butcher's son, made a fortune in Christmas hampers before becoming chairman of Everton and Tranmere Rovers football clubs. As a Birkenhead schoolboy, he supported the local Tranmere team, while in the 1960s he was a season ticket holder and shareholder at Anfield under Bill Shankly's managership of Liverpool. In 1987, Johnson was asked to return to his roots and rescue Tranmere, then in the Fourth Division and deep financial trouble. He brought back a former Tranmere player, John King, for a second stint as manager, and together they led the club to promotion to the Second Division and the play-offs for a place in the First Division. Johnson's wealth was estimated at its peak in the mid-1990s at £150 million, and he ventured into various business interests, including flavoured crisps and freight and parcels. He was a non-executive director of Wirral Hospitals and had a range of other business ventures. Johnson returned to Tranmere after resigning as chairman of Everton in 1998 and sold his 68 per cent shareholding to a consortium led by Bill Kenwright. He finally sold Tranmere in 2014 to the former Tranmere player and FA chief executive Mark Palios. Peter Robert Johnson was born in Upper Parliament Street, Liverpool, on November 24, 1939, to Walter Johnson and Becky. He was educated at St Saviour's primary and Park High grammar school in Birkenhead, leaving at 16 to become a £3-a-week trainee in the chain of butcher's shops founded by his grandfather. Johnson's legacy at Tranmere Rovers will be remembered for his role in the club's promotion and play-off successes. He will also be remembered for his business acumen and his ability to bring people together to achieve success. Johnson's passing has left a void in the football community, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him. The club's fans will remember him for his dedication and commitment to Tranmere Rovers, and his impact on the club's history will never be forgotten. Johnson's story is a testament to his hard work and determination, and he will always be remembered as a key figure in Tranmere Rovers' history.
